You Said YES to the Dress: 3 Next Steps for Alterations!!!
Picture this with us: you’ve found the dress of your dreams (CONGRATS!!!), you’ve brought it home, and now you’re standing in your dress in front of the mirror (because you can’t just leave it in the closet hidden away for months until your wedding, right??). And now you’re ready to take it to the next level, making it custom-fit to your body so it’s 100% comfortable, flattering ALL over, and the PERFECT fit so you are completely confident on your wedding day. What do you do now?
STEP ONE: Don’t Worry
First things first: know that every dress EVER needs some kind of alteration to fit perfectly to each bride’s unique measurements, so you are not alone in needing your dress to be altered. Bringing straps in a couple inches, tightening up the bodice, or even sewing in a corset-lace back to a dress so you have more ability to breathe easily are all SUPER common alterations that brides have done to their dresses!
STEP TWO: Contact Your Seamstress
When it comes to finding an alterations person to alter your wedding dress, we know you want the BEST of the best. It’s your wedding dress, after all, and you want it to be 100% perfect!! We personally take all of our dresses needing repairs or alterations to Marta Daniels at Scissorbird Alterations if you’re looking for an amazing seamstress local to the Bend, Oregon area. If you are needing a seamstress outside the Bend area, we highly recommend reading all reviews and chatting with the seamstress first to make sure you are both completely on the same page about what needs to be done with your dress. Discuss with her what you are looking for: if you are needing a bustle added to your dress, if you are needing custom sleeves sewn onto the dress, or any other custom alterations you are looking for! And most importantly, make sure they do wedding dresses specifically on a regular basis–they are really a-whole-nother ball game.

STEP THREE: Take Your Dress to be Altered
Once you’ve found the perfect alterations person to help you make your dress fit AMAZING, take your dress into your alterations appointment, as well as the exact same shoe (or a shoe with the exact same heel height) to your appointment, so that your seamstress can alter the dress perfectly to match the shoes you’ll be wearing to complete your look. Your seamstress will pin you up, and then you will leave your dress at alterations. When your seamstress is done, you will come back and try it on and tell her any additional tweaks you would like. Be your own advocate–your seamstress will do the work until it is perfect, but you have to be willing to tell them what perfect means to you. You are the boss of your alterations!
